Date of visit : 03rd January 2014
Place : St James Cavalier - Valletta
Name : The Tress of Buskett - agents of the sublime by Peter Paul Barbara
Today I visited the photographic exhibition at St James Cavalier in Valletta. It is named "Trees of Buskett- agents of the sublime" and is being organized by the photographer Peter Paul Barbara .
As the title convey this exhibition is about the trees in Buskett and is a mixture of coloured, sepia and black and white images.
Barbara managed not only to document this natural treasure but also enhancing its beauty.
In this photographic exhibition one can notice that the formal elements play an important role.
He used perspectives to give the photograph a more alluring composition such as these images underneath.
Another formal element that stands out in this exhibition is definitely colour. He made use of natural complimentary colours, where the warm yellowish orange is blended with the purple colour.
Barbara manages to capture the details. In some images he focused on the texture of the different leaves that complement the place, rain drops and ripples.
He made use of reflections which create a sense of peacefulness and well-being.
He paid attention to light and shade , creating patterns and contrast.
In some cases he used different techniques like slow shutter speed to create that visual effect.
This photographic exhibition is like a wake-up call to make us aware of this natural beauty and to make us realize how much this small island has to offer, and which sometimes we do not even notice. While we enjoy it we should conserve it for others.
4 Rooms
Date of visit : 31st October 2013
Place : St James Cavalier
Name : Four Rooms by Ritty Tacsum
We met in Valletta with our lecturer Mr Casha to visit the exhibition with the name "4 Rooms" being held at the upper Galleries of St James Cavalier.
This visual project is presented by the experimental photographer Ritianne Muscat, better known as Ritty Tacsum.
It consists of four rooms, each of them with a theme that all connect to each other and finally to human beings. The themes are on my skin, in my body, in my mind and in my heart.
Taking a first glance at this exhibition one can clearly notice that it is quite different from other exhibitions. It is about her personality, body and relationships presented in a a rather surrealistic way and sometimes also a little disturbing.
In this exhibition there is a combination of photographs, clothes and boxes of tissues amongst others which makes it much more interesting.
The first room 'on my skin' I think refers more to what people see on the outside, the looks which most of the time people judge us on.
The second room which is a visual projection with red, green and blue lights featuring boxes of tissues. It is named 'in my body' which is why the connection to tissues that are found in our body.
The following room with the name 'in my mind' is where the most weird images are. Probably because our mind is very complex and our thoughts can be extreme especially when passing through difficult times.
The last room, 'in my heart' is more focused on relationships with others and maybe even the relationship between society and religion especially due to more than one images showing the statue of Mother Mary or the Cross.
I like the creative concept of four rooms and the mixture of other props with images, however there was not much information about the photographer 's thoughts through the exhibition.... maybe it is done on purpose.
